Our definition of ‘environment’ includes everything from ‘the environment in ourselves’, and our relationships with others, to our natural ecosystems. Potential forms of creative expression include, but are not exclusive
to: Please focus on what and whom you know best, and are inspired by naturally. Your submission may be: 1) published, with your consent, in the upcoming edition of the SAY EE Magazine, planned to be available in the Spring of 2007, and/or 2) showcased at the 5th Southern Alberta Environmental Summit, March 29th, 2007 at the Lethbridge Galt Museum. Be a LEADER in environmental education in southern Alberta!
The Need for LEADERS
According to the EEON (Environmental Education of Ontario) study in 2002, Canadians are not educated well enough to make environmental friendly choices. Only 4% of Canadians believe they have enough knowledge to make choices that environmentally friendly. James Hoggan and Asso. (2006) Study states 90% of Canadians surveyed fear our lifestyle in not sustainable. The same study indicates that 70% of those surveyed could not define sustainability. There is an obvious lack of environmental knowledge, and North Americans are seeking for ways to become educated.
LEADERS Motivation and Background for LEADERS The importance of environmental literacy around the world has taken center stage in our society. Political, economic and societal leaders have all stepped forward to profess the urgency of the state of our environment and most importantly our children have raised their voice in support of the right to be environmentally educated. Climate change, Kyoto Accord, and sustainability have become common terms in our vocabulary, however children and many adults are uncertain of their meaning and how solutions can be created. In order to find a solution one must understand the problem first. The creation of LEADERS in conjunction with the development of Southern Alberta Community of Environmental Educators (SACEE) will be at the leading edge of environmental education and an educational leader in Canada. SACEE is composed of many different stakeholders in environmental education,
including school boards, teachers, NGOs, business, industry, foundations,
community groups, university faculty members, and municipal, provincial,
and federal governments. LEADERS will build the bridges required to educate
our teachers, entice our parents, engage our community and empower our
children to do extraordinary things for themselves and their community. |
