A Call for Creative Expression
“ Knowing Our Place”

Inspire and Educate by sharing your creativity with southern Albertans on your impression of the theme: “Knowing Our Place”.

Our definition of ‘environment’ includes everything from ‘the environment in ourselves’, and our relationships with others, to our natural ecosystems.

Potential forms of creative expression include, but are not exclusive to:
- Informative articles with personable connection,
- Short story, essay, or other prose,
- Poetry, song lyrics,
- Drawings, paintings, pictures and other creative work,
show-casing our natural environment, an/or exemplary work in caring for our natural environment by Aboriginal, Economic, Political, Educational, Artistic, Environmental, Family and other Community Leaders, including your neighbors and yourself, “Past, Present, Future.”

Please focus on what and whom you know best, and are inspired by naturally. Your submission may be: 1) published, with your consent, in the upcoming edition of the SAY EE Magazine, planned to be available in the Spring of 2007, and/or 2) showcased at the 5th Southern Alberta Environmental Summit, March 29th, 2007 at the Lethbridge Galt Museum.

Cash scholarships will be awarded for exemplary creative work from youth and the young at heart (all ages). Please submit work that expresses the true nature of your vantage point, your voice, eyes, and ears, keeping the product close to the source of inspiration. Ideally the submission will act to enhance the ‘readers’ awareness and appreciation, and facilitate better use and care of our natural environment.

Please forward you ‘submission’ before February 25, 2007. To submit your article call or email to:

Be a LEADER in environmental education in southern Alberta!

The Need for LEADERS

According to the EEON (Environmental Education of Ontario) study in 2002, Canadians are not educated well enough to make environmental friendly choices. Only 4% of Canadians believe they have enough knowledge to make choices that environmentally friendly. James Hoggan and Asso. (2006) Study states 90% of Canadians surveyed fear our lifestyle in not sustainable. The same study indicates that 70% of those surveyed could not define sustainability. There is an obvious lack of environmental knowledge, and North Americans are seeking for ways to become educated.

LEADERS
in Environmental Education

Motivation and Background for LEADERS

The importance of environmental literacy around the world has taken center stage in our society. Political, economic and societal leaders have all stepped forward to profess the urgency of the state of our environment and most importantly our children have raised their voice in support of the right to be environmentally educated. Climate change, Kyoto Accord, and sustainability have become common terms in our vocabulary, however children and many adults are uncertain of their meaning and how solutions can be created. In order to find a solution one must understand the problem first.

The creation of LEADERS in conjunction with the development of Southern Alberta Community of Environmental Educators (SACEE) will be at the leading edge of environmental education and an educational leader in Canada.

SACEE is composed of many different stakeholders in environmental education, including school boards, teachers, NGOs, business, industry, foundations, community groups, university faculty members, and municipal, provincial, and federal governments. LEADERS will build the bridges required to educate our teachers, entice our parents, engage our community and empower our children to do extraordinary things for themselves and their community.

Release date June 1st.

Leaders in Environmental Education – sayee magazine will be 80+ pages, printed with natural ink on recycled paper, and will be available to the public for free. The initial printing of 10,000 copies will be available June 1st at the Canadian EECOM Conference in Kananaskis. The free publication will then be widely distributed through southern Alberta.

This guide provides an opportunity for southern Alberta to become aware of and appreciate the resources we have available to us and to envision a sustainable future for our regional community.

In keeping with SACEE’s history of empowering teens, the guide is being created almost entirely by students from various southern Alberta high schools. Teenagers are selling advertising, developing the design, selecting and editing articles, interviewing community members, and identifying criteria used to evaluate organizations and businesses for sustainability.

The result will be a comprehensive document that seeks to unite in one easily accessible publication, information for anyone - student, educator, builder, architect, tourist, activist, citizen - interested in discovering the wealth of opportunities and resources available to people in the southern Alberta region who want to live sustainably.

The LEADERS in Environmental Education magazine will be inclusive, envisioning sustainability from a multi-cultural perspective. It will include articles on Food, Green Building, Renewable Energy, Water, Community Wellness, Ecology, Civic Involvement, Cultural Diversity, and more.
