People
representing various community groups gather bi-annually
to share information and learn together via formal
presentations, tutorials, group discussions, and
casual interaction. The first summit, October 2005,
was organized by the founders of the Alberta Council
of Environmental Education with hopes to better
understand southern Alberta’s perspective
on the future direction of Environmental Education.
The interest and enthusiasm of the initial 26 participants
prompted the creation of Summit 2, (December, 2005).
The
second summit attracted 73 political, educational,
environmental and economic leaders from across southern
Alberta. With the success of Summit 2, including
unanimous support to host additional summits, SACEE
was created to coordinate and facilitate a number
of environmental education initiatives.
Summit
3, in April 2006, evolved into: a full day summit
of 178 participants, two colloquia with pre-readings,
and presentations on 10 different topics, including
forestry, water, civic initiatives, religious perspectives,
biodiversity, First Nations culture, and eco-tourism.
Summit
4 was co-hosted by the City of Medicine Hat and
SACEE. At the end of Summit #2, Mayor Vallely (Medicine
Hat ) volunteered to co-host Summit #4 which extended
the collaborative partnership to the southeastern
corner of the province. Summit #4 was held October
11, 2006. More than 85 people participated in an
exceptional program profiling 18 environmental initiatives
in southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan.
Topics included the Craik Sustainable Living Project,
Suffield Native Prairie, South Saskatchewan River
Basin, Palliser Airshed, Educational programs, Civic
Leadership, Facilities/Infrastructure, Water and
Waste.
Summit
5, March 29, 2007 was held at the Galt Museum in
Lethbridge. 140 delegates from across southern Alberta
participated in round table discussions about the
envirionmental history of southern Alberta, working
together to become sustainable, revisiting environmentalism
in the 21st century and becoming a leader in environmental
awareness and action.
Summit
6, Apitsiskitsikisoom, ( ‘when living plants begin
to blossom' ) was held May 29, 2008 at the Kainai
High School on the Blood Reserve. 220 delegates
collaborated to discuss environmental and health
issues on the Kainai Reserve and throughout southern
Alberta. Kainai Elder, Stan Knowlton, began the
day with a presentation discussing the importance
on understanding and respecting the earth's cycles.
More than 160 Kainai and Winston Churchill (Lethbridge)
high school students and 60 southern Alberta adults
discussed the following topics:
water,
soil errosion, nutrition, Bill 51, garbage disposal,
domestic animal control, food prices, high fuel
costs, 'duck deaths' in northern Alberta, global
warming, alternative energy.
After
lunch Paul Bohnert spoke about the importance of
the engagement of youth in stewardship and the importance
of environmental education to future generations.
The formal part of the Summit was concluded with
students from both high schools demonstrating traditional
First Nations games and dances. More than 40 people
were treated to the opportunity of witness the Belly
Buttes on the Reserve. This elevated land mass,
vibrant colours and unique tradition was an absolute
treat.
Environment
Summit #6
SACEE
partnered with the Kainai High School on the Blood
Reserve to host the 6th Southern Alberta Environmental
Summit May 29th. More than 200 Kainai Elders, teachers,
environmental leaders and students shared their
ideas on environmental topics that are impacting
the Blood Reserve. Ten topics were considerd and
discussed some of the topics included water, waste
management, and food production. The afternoon of
